Obiectiv al întregii clase politice românești, cucerirea independenței de stat a fost, în fapt, rezultatul unei îndelungi bătălii diplomatice, politice și militare, a cărei finalizare a schimbat în mod definitoriu nu numai statutul politico-juridic al țării, dar și postura sa geopolitică de ansamblu în noua configurație de putere apărută în sud-estul Europei, în contextul marilor transformări sistemice din a doua jumătate a secolului XIX. Având în vedere noile trenduri de cercetare în spațiul istoriografic actual, considerăm cu deosebire util demersul nostru editorial care își propune să satisfacă multiple obiective și să aducă noi contribuții la cercetarea acestui capitol definitoriu al istoriei noastre. Prezenta selecție de documente își propune să ofere cititorilor o imagine cât mai exhaustivă în ceea ce privește reflectarea evenimentelor istorice, a faptelor și acțiunilor actorilor principali din epocă implicați în decizia politică și militară. Ne propunem, de asemenea, să punem în circulație documente puțin cunoscute ori complet necunoscute în istoriografie referitoare la decizia politico-militară, dar și la relațiile existente între România, Rusia și Turcia, atât înainte, cât mai ales în timpul și în perioada ulterioară Războiului de Independență. Veți găsi în paginile acestui album documente diplomatice și militare de referință pentru istoria Războiului de Independență. Documentele militare sunt relevante atât din perspectiva înțelegerii dinamicii frontului, cât și a complexității relațiilor militare româno-ruse. De asemenea, pentru a oferi publicului cititor, fie el specialist ori doar interesat de istorie, o imagine cât mai aproape de realitate a evenimentelor, am ales reproducerea documentelor în forma lor facsimilată, considerând că, prin aceasta, putem oferi o imagine mai clară asupra evenimentelor, dar și asupra mecanismelor decizionale și provocărilor cu care s-au confruntat în epocă actorii principali ai evenimentelor în discuție. The assertion of Romania’s state independence remains a historical moment that decisively and fundamentally marked the destiny of the country. “We are independent, we are a nation in its own right!” was the phrase that expressed the most profound national aspirations to achieve the great country project – a project undertaken through the Romanian Revolution of 1848, and with its first stage materialised through the Unification of the Romanian Principalities in 1859. Having been a target for the entire Romanian political class, obtaining state independence was actually the final result of a lengthy diplomatic, military, and political battle whose end permanently altered not only the political and legal status of the country, but also its overall geopolitical position within the new power configuration that had appeared in south-eastern Europe, on the background of the great systemic changes in the second half of the 19th century. Considering research trends in present-day historiography, we consider our editorial approach to be particularly useful, as it seeks to satisfy multiple goals and to bring new contributions to the research of this defining chapter of our history. The current selection of documents aims to provide the readers with the most exhaustive account of the historical events, facts and actions carried out by the main actors involved in the political and military decisions at the time. We also aim to disseminate documents that are either scarcely known or completely unknown in the historiography concerning the political and military decision-making process, as well as concerning the relations between Romania, Russia and Turkey, both before, but especially during and after the War of Independence. You will find in the pages of this album key diplomatic and military documents on the history of the War of Independence. The military ones are particularly relevant both from the perspective of understanding the dynamics of the front, but also the complexity of Romanian-Russian military relations. In addition to this, in order to provide the reader (whether a specialist or someone merely interested in history) with a picture of the events as close to reality as possible, we have chosen to publish the documents in facsimile form, believing that this will give us a better insight into the events, but also into the decision-making mechanisms and challenges faced by the main actors at the time.
